Brenner Marlos hat-trick sends Bac Ninh past Long An 3-2 in National Cup qualifier

On the night of September 19, I sat in a small room in Nha Trang, my ear pressed to an old radio, listening to the commentary from Long An stadium break in waves against the shore. A corner swung into the box, Brenner Marlos rose, headed the ball, and the net shook. The stand held its breath, then burst. In that instant I understood this match would not end the way people expected.

Bac Ninh came to Long An as a newly promoted V-League side. Their road ran through a First Division runners-up finish, a play-off win over PVF-CAND for promotion, and, days earlier, a 1-0 victory over Cong An TP.HCM in V-League Round 2. Drawing on my experience watching matches, I have always treated National Cup away trips as the hardest fixtures to read in Vietnamese football.

All three Bac Ninh goals were born from dead balls and crosses from the flanks. The opener was a header from a corner. The second came from Phan The Hung’s left-wing delivery. The third began with Vu Hong Quan’s free kick, the ball rebounding off the post with Brenner arriving at the right moment to convert. Across Vietnamese leagues, foreign centre-forwards, mostly Brazilian, carry a large share of goal output. For a newly promoted club, that dependence cuts two ways: it is a lifeline on the pitch and a risk on the books, because the contract of such a striker is tied directly to the club’s ability to keep its place in the top flight. A contract is a sheet of paper, but behind it is a life that has just turned a page.

The prettiest story local media told afterwards was the story of a gift. Bac Ninh formally became a centrally governed city on September 20, and the National Cup win was framed as the club’s gift to the city. I understand and respect the way a match is lifted into a collective ritual; Vietnamese football lives on such rituals.

Yet stopping there means missing the hardest part. Media loves underdogs and loves upsets, because they draw traffic. In this match, though, Bac Ninh were not the underdog in any emotional sense: they were the higher-tier side, playing away, and they nearly let a three-goal lead slip against a First Division opponent. Their promotion miracle carries a price, a thin squad, an attacking system dependent on high balls, and a single forward as the only fulcrum. Once V-League defenders decode the crosses and the corners, the question shifts from “how many can we score” to “how many can we keep”. Not every abyss has a way out, and not every win is a hinge.
